OVERVIEW

Energy from waste

The CLIENT designs a small-scale gasification-based waste-to-energy unit which incinerates and converts a variety of combustible materials into thermal energy. On sites such as a ship or an isolated community where the wastes are generated but not collected, all combustible by-products are eliminated and the inorganic portion of the waste is sterilized. They needed a fabricator to build a standalone modular unit for repeatability and efficiency to prepare their entry into the market. Their prototype model had evolved over time, and the challenge lies in establishing manufacturing tolerances and dimensions to improve on welding sequences. Due to the mix of both carbon steels, stainless steels and refractory materials on the units, there will be simultaneous product design and modifications during the prototype manufacturing.

APPROACH

Engineering collaboration

With the units still being prototypes at the time, the CLIENT provided all the Solidworks drawings and DIMARTECH provided its expertise in manufacturing to emphasize repeatability and efficiency. Several units were built with constant communicating between DIMARTECH and CLIENT engineers with regards to enhancements and modifications to the existing design. Through DIMARTECH’s recommendations, the CLIENT’s drawings were edited for all future units.

DELIVERABLES

Safe, reliable and commercially-ready process equipment

The design modifications, fabrication, inspection, and testing were successfully completed. The collaboration between DIMARTECH and the CLIENT’s engineers resulted in the successful completion while meeting the project schedule. A second order was placed for more units, and the modified design led way to further enhancements. A third order solidified the design with a commercially-ready product which vastly improved the end-user’s installation and maintenance tasks in the field, thereby creating a more favourable client experience. The product line is now ready for commercialization.

The CLIENT required a pressure vessel manufacturer to design and build seven (7) primary and secondary separator pressure vessels in SS304L stainless steel. Girth flanges allow for safe and complete access for commissioning and maintenance purposes for the plant personnel.
