OVERVIEW
96’’ diameter carbon steel ASME vessel
SINCLAIR REFINING, a Wyoming-based oil refining company planned for a scheduled shutdown on its equipment maintenance and upgrading of capital equipment. One such pressure vessel to be worked on is a 96’’ diameter carbon steel ASME vessel with a welded 24’’ diameter dross sump at the drain bottom.
This dross sump has become badly corroded, has been deemed unsafe for continued operation and needed to be removed and replaced with a new one. The chosen material for the new dross sump is the high-nickel alloy Inconel.
Our CLIENT (AZZ) is one of the main contractors upgrading the equipment on site and they need to replace a new sump with ASME certifications and Inconel (P45) welding procedures. Their main concern is the scheduled shutdown date that cannot be moved and the clock was ticking.

ENGINEERING
An Inconel weld overlay solution
The preliminary schedule presented by DIMARTECH was refused due to the long lead times for the Inconel dished head, nozzles, and flanges. An alternate solution was needed quickly. We proposed and offered an Inconel weld overlay solution covering internal surfaces of a carbon steel dished head and carbon steel flange faces. An Inconel composite inserted nozzle assembly was also designed and thermal expansion growth rates for both Inconel and carbon steel were calculated and presented to the CLIENT.
We submitted the ASME calculations and drawings to the Authorized Inspector for ASME standards adherence and to the CLIENT for their approval. Upon acceptance from both, we proceeded with the purchase of materials and fabrication per the newly designed sump. Inspections included 100% full radiography, 100% PT, 100% PMI readings.

DELIVERY
Project completed before critical deadline
The fabrication, inspection, testing and delivery was successfully completed on time before the deadline. Our CLIENT received the sump at the jobsite, and welded it to the vessel on time thereby respecting their contract with the oil company.
The collaboration between DIMARTECH and our CLIENT’s engineers resulted in the successful resolution to a situation which could have easily been detrimental to the project schedule. Their risk factor greatly surpassed ours in this contract, and they were grateful that all technical and commercial aspects were respected.
