OVERVIEW
Transform waste into renewable energy
The City of Edmonton Municipal Waste Management Facility invested in ENERKEM’s innovative technology to transform municipal solid waste to produce renewable methanol and ethanol. They needed a pressure vessel manufacturer to design, build and warrantee a vertical Steam Stripper Column with several constraints:
- Tower Column height to diameter = 840’’ / 40’’ = 21. Fully self-standing, self-supporting tower with no lateral supports. Complete with fifteen (15) internal drip trays.
- Built with high-chromium variation of stainless of Duplex 2205 with 23%Cr-5%Ni-3%Mo, and welded with (P10H) procedures and 40-50% ferrite in basic annealed condition.
- Equipment is subjected to 100% RT inspections, hardness and ferrite readings, pressure containment, dynamic and structural loading, shipping loads and rigging loads.

APPROACH
Full-turnkey engineering & fabrication
DIMARTECH provided the CLIENT with designs and calculations for six (6) different load cases with various combinations of static and dynamic loadings for pressure, vacuum, wind, seismic, loadings on nozzles, contents full of liquid. Due to the high H/D ratio of 21, the vessel was also at risk of buckling and susceptible to overloading during lifting and handling.
DIMARTECH submitted the calculations and drawings to the ABSA Authorized Inspector for ASME standards adherence and to the CLIENT for their approval. Upon acceptance from both, we proceeded with the purchase of materials and fabrication. Inspections included 100% full radiography, 100% PT, 100% PMI readings, impact tests, hardness tests, ferrite readings and hydrotest.

The fabrication, inspection, testing and delivery was successfully completed on time before the deadline. The collaboration between DIMARTECH and our CLIENT’s engineers resulted in successful completion while meeting the project schedule.
